Safety/Luck
Safety/Luck group exhibition combines different approaches that a culture may use to protect its residents. “Safety” comes from the American focus on keeping its residents safe with safety materials: caution tape, instructional signs and reflective material.
“Luck” comes from the Japanese tradition of attaining luck through charms, rituals and temples. The creator of the exhibition and lead curator, Michiko Tanaka draws from observations of growing up between Japanese and American cultures.
26 artists will participate in the show: Stephanie Ames, Samantha Kasprowicz, Richart, Ryan Patterson, Mallory Hunt, Sam Guccione, $$$C, Buster Simpson, Monica Gutweis, Tilmann Pusch, Jed Phoenix, Milinda Lawless, Jyotsna Ambarukana, Jimmy Quatier, Silentt, Jay Herzmark, Mackie Johnson, John Burgess, Jeffery Smith, Polly Purvis, Christopher Hydinger, Nick Shiflet, Chris Poullos, Michael Pederson, Lily Martina Lee, and Clet Abraham.

“…This exhibit, guest curated by Seattle artist Michiko Tanaka, brings together the work of more than two dozen artists, focusing on art created with safety materials like caution tape, instructional signs and reflective material. It asks the audience: What is safety, what is luck — and who is afforded it?”
