Crinkle Paintings

Artist’s Statement:
Crinkle Paintings
are a subset of Mihalyo’s greater œuvre. It is his response to the inscrutable lock-down era of the pandemic, an exploration of the complexities of globally prevalent enigmatic emotions, and the individuated passage of time incapsulated in the process of his craft. The field paintings evolved into abstract figurative works and opened the way to explore increasingly elaborate compositions.

Mihalyo’s technique involved wrinkling a prepared canvas, applying paint to the new surface state, re-stretching the canvas and finishing with a brush. The result creates a pareidolia effect in the eye of the viewer.

In his art, Mihalyo discusses world and philosophical issues through a multifaceted system of symbolic and narrative compositions. Each piece emphasizes a need for balance in order to explore the complexity of the theme.
