“Reconstruction”, new art quilts by Darbury Stenderu
Darbury Stenderu has taken this traditional craft and updated it as a medium in which to incorporate and preserve her original prints. The Art Quilt stands out as soft sculpture, a visual two-dimensional format that can speak to people while preserving her signature patterning and repetition.
Her desire to create unique and original works is seen in the details --dense and obsessive stitching, laboriously placed patchworks, abstract patterning, random and repetitive print. The potential for growth is infinite.
Using fine and luxurious fabrics she hand screens prints from her own complex silk- screen paintings. The dyes interact with the cloth and create an organic texture and variation within each print. No two are ever identical. Every step in the process is done by hand. Her prints are recognizable, her audience global.
Darbury Stenderu has compiled a body of work that has a huge visual impact--at once technically skilled while being spontaneous, raw, and organic. These quilts are made to be used as a workaday function, or appreciated as Fine Art: they are timeless, archival, and collectible.
