Derin is a Seattle native, arts supporter, educator of children, and artist. In the early 90's, he created and ran the Carnegie Gallery. From 2000-2005, he was an assistant to Francine Seders of Francine Seders Gallery. While with Francine, he developed and ran Artstars, an art program for kids. He has also taught at the University of Washington's Summer Youth Program.

He currently works as a painter and sculptor for Pacific Studio, a company that builds creative exhibits for museums. From September 11, 2006-September 10, 2007, he produced The Times of Our Lives, 365 painting completed in 365 days, inspired by images on the front page of The New York Times.

Derin showed his seminal work, The Times of Our Lives, at CoCA and joined the Board in 2008. He produced the CoCA Annual in 2008 and currently acts as Curator for the Belltown Gallery. He participated as an artist for the 2009 Art Marathon.
