Calendar The
4 groups of artists that comprise this project are: Here and There: Ten Seattle artists create
work that explores the dynamics of non-commercial art encountered in a
public place versus art exhibited in traditionally recognized venues.
Each artist has initiated a two-part project. One component is integrated
into a public setting with conceptual origins in daily activities or social
interactions and its reciprocal component is sited at CoCA. Maps to public
sites are available at all project locations and at CoCA. The Center for Land Use Interpretation
(CLUI): The Center for Land Use Interpretation is a non-profit organization
based in Los Angeles. As the human-built environment expands, covering
more and more of the planet, CLUI takes a look at the multitude of concerns
and perspectives that shape the many ways we alter the landscape. Focusing
on industrial, commercial and defense sites, CLUI conducts tours, publishes
guidebooks, and presents documentary photographs that highlight the often
overlooked curiosities of a particular region. CLUI will be conducting
3 tours in the Seattle area. Ask CoCA
staff for ticket information. Marilyn Arsem: Boston-based performance
artist Marilyn Arsem has been commissioned to produce a site-specific
performance entitled recent: remote on July 24-25, at a former
Nike missile base in the Seattle area. The two hour performance is designed
to examine the ways in which we construct history and, in particular,
how we understand our recent collective heritage - the cold war. Ask CoCA
staff for ticket information. men of the world: A performance duo from
Chicago and Syracuse, men of the world specialize in performing site-specific
unannounced public gestures that attempt to test the boundaries between
public and private behavior by intervening in people's daily routines.
On June 21, 22, and 23 in downtown Seattle during the busiest business
hours, men of the world will create a specific performance that focuses
on the city, its architecture, and its urban growth. They perform almost
exclusively in sites of brisk pedestrian activity, such as governmental
plazas, subway stops, parks, public memorials, promenades and great thoroughfares,
and attempt to gently shift the thought patterns of people who happen
upon their performances. A selection of photographs of a past project
will be on view at the CoCA gallery.
