Nature Illuminated

Artist’s Statement:
My art reveals the hidden beauty in nature, reimagined in bolder, brighter colors. My work begins with my connection to the living world around me: flora, fauna, and landscapes. I transform natural patterns and shapes into vibrant abstractions, using color gradients to amplify their vitality. Dramatic colors and striking forms bring me a sense of beauty, joy, and awe that I would like to share with my viewers.

Travel has been a primary source of inspiration for me, and I have set foot on every continent but Antarctica.

In this show, I use my own photographs of plants from the Pacific Bonsai Museum and animals from Botswana and Namibia as source materials. My goal is to share the vital notion that nature is beautiful but fragile — it needs our care.

Judy Chia Hui Hsu is a visual artist.

Her artwork is influenced by her years as a journalist. She enjoyed writing about Arts and Entertainment for The Los Angeles Times and The Seattle Times, especially dance performances, where peaceful and frenetic movements alike tell stories through abstractions.

Judy’s work has been shown in numerous cities throughout the United States, including bG Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), Earth Action Initiative (Berkeley, CA), the Cultural Center of Cape Cod (Yarmouth, MA) and Wailoa Center (Hilo, HI). She won Best in Show in the Abstractions exhibit at Blue Girl Gallery (Dallas, Texas). She was awarded 1st place in the Abstract category at Best of Gage. Judy had a solo show through CoCA (Center on Contemporary Art) at Gary Manuel in Seattle’s Lake Union district, and she has an upcoming solo show at the Pacific Bonsai Museum this spring.

Judy holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a master’s degree from the University of Southern California’s Graduate School of Journalism. She studied for a year at Oxford University. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Los Angeles, Judy is currently based in Seattle, and travels whenever she can.

CoCA ShowWalls is a show opportunity for CoCA Artist in partnership with local businesses.
