“I am a black woman poet and painter. My art practice inspires, informs, and educates of the lived experience of being Black in America. My work illustrates the ways I envision a better future for us. Awakened spirituality and the blending of reality with supernaturalism is poignant in my work. My mantra is to and continuously expand your vision of what is possible, stretch your soul, and believe in the God in you.

My paintings explore themes of voidness, identity, self-liberation, and spiritual evolution. I like to center my figures in nature scenes where vastness is present. Placing characters against a seemingly endless valley or sea influences viewers to reflect on where the main protagonists are traveling to or where they’ve been and to reflect on their own journeys simultaneously. I enjoy highlighting the innate power I believe we all have within ourselves. Black people in general have an extensive complicated history of channeling our inner power and overcoming obstacles in order to triumph.

However powerful as we may be, everyone is deserving of restoration, serenity, and joy. To feel free. To frolic. To just exist without feeling the need to labor or perform. Seeking Transcendence was made to highlight the much-needed Black person’s right to exist in spaces with the only contribution to that space being that person’s presence. This is more than enough. “Seeking Transcendence” illustrates what life could look like when the restraints of social pressures are removed, and we are allowed to just be in the utopias I’ve created.”
