Contrasts in Nature

Artist’s Statement:
My art reveals the hidden beauty in nature, re-imagining it in bold, bright colors. My work begins with my connection to the living world around me: flora, fauna, and landscape. I depict these natural forms and patterns as vibrant, organic shapes, using color gradients to amplify their vitality. The interplay of high-contrast colors — and the interaction between positive and negative shapes — produce a glowing effect. I hope to bring a sense of beauty, joy, and awe to the viewer.

Travel has been a primary source of inspiration for me, and I have set foot on every continent but Antarctica. I have a particular interest in plants and animals, as well as landscapes from the deserts, tropics, and the Arctic.

In this show, I use my own photographs of plants from the Pacific Bonsai Museum and animals from Botswana and Namibia as source materials. My goal is to share the vital notion that nature is beautiful but fragile—it needs our care.

Judy Chia Hui Hsu is a visual artist.

Her artwork is influenced by her years as a journalist. She enjoyed writing about Arts and Entertainment for The Los Angeles Times and The Seattle Times, especially dance performances, where peaceful and frenetic movements alike tell stories through abstractions.

Judy’s work has been shown in numerous cities throughout the United States, including bG Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), Earth Action Initiative (Berkeley, CA), the Cultural Center of Cape Cod (Yarmouth, MA) and Wailoa Center (Hilo, HI). She won Best in Show in the Abstractions exhibit at Blue Girl Gallery (Dallas, Texas). She was awarded 1st place in the Abstract category at Best of Gage. Judy had a solo show with CoCA (Center on Contemporary Art) at Gary Manuel Salon in Seattle’s Lake Union district.

In 2021, Judy was commissioned to create Flow, a 12-panel temporary public art installation for the city of Edmonds, WA. That same year, she was chosen to be on the Public Artist Roster for Washington State’s Art in Public Places.

Judy holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a master’s degree from the University of Southern California’s Graduate School of Journalism. She studied for a year at Oxford University. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Los Angeles, Judy is currently based in Seattle, and travels whenever she can.
